About American Lutheran Church
Many hard-working people and various supporting church organizations have made this
church a strong, active, and vital congregation.
The church provides a number of programs for children and youth, such as Sunday school
throughout the school year for ages 3 to 18. Our elementary ages participate in a Rotation
Sunday School curriculum which has been a joyful addition to our education! Bible School is
in the spring and is done in cooperation with other churches in the Gothenburg community.
JAM or "Jesus is Alive in Me" is a non-denominational after school program serving over 90
children on Wednesdays.
Affirmation classes are available for youth in Jr high school on Wednesday nights at 6:30
with supper.
Lutheran Youth Organization engages high school youth in Bible study, special programs,
service projects, and relationship building fellowship as well as an opportunity to attend the
Nebraska LYON conference each fall and the National Youth Gathering. We also offer
opportunities for adult classes: Early morning women's book study on Tuesdays at 6 AM,
and a men's book study on Wednesdays at 6 AM. Classes are also available on Sunday
mornings at 9:30 AM. An American Lutheran Church Women's group offers bible study and
service opportunities. The Church Quilters have quilted many fine quilts and purchased
special items for the church through service. Quilts are sent to charities and the Lutheran
World Relief program.
Music has been very important part of our heritage. Through the years we have had many
choirs, including mens, women's, and children choirs. Many small groups such as
outstanding men's double quartet and a Worship and Praise band often enrich our worship
services as do a number of specially talented individuals. The congregation also enjoys
various bell choirs and a updated solid-stated pipe organ which is beautifully played by our
two organists. The congregation currently uses a variety of traditional and contemporary
musical resources for worship, and enjoys children to be a part of worship at every
opportunity.
Over the last 50 years more that 1,100 have been baptized, and as many confirmed. We
have celebrated several hundred weddings and given thanks for the lives of more than 600
who have passed on to God's glory. Five sons and one daughter of the congregation have
gone on to become ordained ministers. Five members are Certified Parish Ministry
Associates. We have numerous Stephens Ministers, and during the 1990's seven interns
completed their training in our church. We currently have 1,273 baptized members and 955
confirmed members.
As a part of the Gothenburg/Brady Ministerial Association, we continue to enjoy an integral
part in the social ministry of our community . We are grateful to be able to provide our
facilities to various groups in need of a place to meet, celebrate, and relax.
God has richly blessed the congregation and our church. May the Lord continue to
abundantly bless us as we carry on the work of God's Kingdom with praise and thanksgiving!
